The Rica Test includes two different types of assessments that candidates have the option to choose in order to satisfy a passing Rica Test score. These include:

  • Rica Written Assessment
  • Rica Video Assessment

Purpose

The Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) Test is given to people who want to earn their Multiple-Subjects Teaching Credential or Education Specialist Instruction Credential in California.

This assessment allows candidates to demonstrate their understanding for and ability to provide effective reading instruction to students in elementary and middle school grades.

Videos and Accompanying Forms

In order to complete the Rica Video Performance Assessment, candidates will submit a total of three videos with accompanying forms. These include the following:

  • An informational write up detailing the lesson plan being recorded and information about the students in the lesson.
  • 10 minutes of video footage of actual reading instruction to students by the teaching candidate.
  • A written reflection from the teaching candidate that provides a review of the video-recorded reading instruction, as well as offers next steps for further instruction to continue helping the students reach the standard being taught.

Video 1 showcases the teaching candidate providing whole-class reading instruction.

Video 2 showcases the teaching candidate providing small-group reading instruction.

Video 3 showcases the teaching candidate providing one-to-one reading instruction with an individual student.

Keep in mind the following important guidelines to follow:

  • Candidates must meet all Rica Video Assessment requirements to be eligible for a passing result.
  • All instruction must be synchronous and conducted in real-time.
  • Each video lesson must be designed from a specified competency from the following domains:
    • Domain 1. Planning, Organizing, and Managing Reading Instruction Based on Ongoing Assessment
    • Domain 2. Word Analysis
    • Domain 3. Fluency
    • Domain 4. Vocabulary, Academic Language, and Background Knowledge
    • Domain 5. Comprehension
  • Every video lesson must demonstrate the candidates knowledge and skills in reading instruction from two domains of the RICA Content Specifications: Domain 1 (Planning, Organizing, and Managing Reading Instruction Based on Ongoing Assessment) AND the domain on which the lesson is based. Furthermore, candidates must teach  students from actual school classrooms, meaning you cannot create a mock class to complete this assessment.
  • Candidates can use virtual platforms, such as Zoom for their video assessment.
  • Both the candidate and students must be seen and heard in the video lessons.
  • The submitted video lesson must be unedited, with the following exceptions:
    • Covering or removing student names to protect privacy.
    • Closed captioning may be turned on to enhance audio intelligibility.
  • Candidates should continue to adhere to  school guidelines for recording in online settings.
  • The whole-class instruction video must include at least 5 students.
  • The small-group instruction video must include at least 3 students, but no more than 12.
