Subtest 3 - About

Purpose: The purpose of Subtest 3 is to make certain that California educators are trained in and capable of providing students with the knowledge and skills to learn the important skills of reading. Teachers need to be well versed in providing effective reading instruction.

Multiple-choice questions: All multiple-choice questions are designed with four possible answers, but only one is the best choice. It is important to read all of the available options and to select the best option, as there is no penalty for guessing. Some multiple-choice questions include graphs, tables, charts, journal entries and other illustrations or diagrams, and you will want to quickly, but carefully review all the information to select the best possible answer.

Constructed-response questions: The typical format of the constructed-response, or essay questions includes the given information pertaining to and about a student’s reading ability using a real-life situation, along with supplementary information in the form of charts and/or diagrams. The test taker is then asked to discuss, describe, analyze, explain, or evaluate the given information and present a logical response, based on best practices for reading instruction.

Scoring:

Reaching a score of 220 is considered a pass for RICA each subtest.

  • For multiple-choice questions: scored electronically and tallied based on the number of questions answered correctly.
  • For constructed-response questions: A trained person judges the overall effectiveness of the response, according to the characteristics of reading instruction practices, teacher modeling, and student practice.

What Do You Need To Study?

Subtest 3 covers the introduction level of reading instruction information for the multiple-choice section; However, while taking subtest 3, you will also be asked to complete the case study written response.

The major challenge about writing a passing response for the case study is not so much the length of your response that’s required by the test administrators that makes the case study so difficult, but actually that the case study topic can be about any subject within domain 2-5. For this reason, the third subtest is considered to be an extremely rigorous subtest, mostly because of the case study section.

In technical terms, Subtest 3 includes content specifications from Domain 1:

Planning, Organizing, and Managing Reading Instruction Based on Ongoing Assessment.

Below you will find the breakdown of the competencies, which act like subtopics within each domain:

Domain 1:

  • Competency 1: Understand how to plan, organize, and manage standards-based reading instruction.

How Long Should You Study For?

The answer to this question depends on your current schedule and current foundational understanding for reading instructional strategies and terminology.

The entire RICA Test, including all three subtests, will require you to memorize nearly 200 technical terms about reading instruction. Luckily, our RICA Test study guide has you covered with a complete list of the terms and their meanings. This way, you don’t have to guess at which terms you need to pass, and you also don’t have to find the definitions of these terms. Everything is provided for you in our test preparation material to make passing your RICA simple and straight forward.

Furthermore, Subtest 3 includes a total of one constructed response (case study) question. The challenging aspect about the RICA® written response section is that it has a specified guideline to follow when writing your response. For more information about writing a passing response continue reading below.

Subtest 3 - Best Strategy

The RICA subtests allow the test takers to complete the test in the order (multiple-choice or essay questions) that best suits the person taking the exam.
For this reason, it is important to develop the best strategy that works for  you.

On the one hand, you can work on the multiple-choice section and use a note pad to jot down reading instructional strategies and key terms as you move through the exam. Then, when it’s time to write the constructed-responses, you will have an outline of content to refer to and use.

Take a moment and evaluate your own reading and writing speed and confidence for each skill. If you are a slower reading and a faster writer, it is wise to take the multiple-choice section first, so that you make sure to complete the entire multiple-choice section. If you feel confident in understanding the RICA specifications, key terms and reading strategies to implement with students and writing is challenging for you, it will be best to spend the first amount of time to thoroughly complete the constructed-response section.
