Ready For RICA

The RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) is a credentialing exam for prospective reading teachers in California. To prepare for the RICA, you should start by thoroughly reviewing the content covered on the exam, including reading instruction methods and techniques, assessment and evaluation of reading progress, and the foundations of reading development. You can find study materials and practice tests on the RICA Test Prep page to learn more.

In addition to reviewing the content covered on the exam, it is also important to develop good test-taking strategies. This may include practicing time management skills, reviewing test-taking strategies such as eliminating incorrect answers or guessing when you are unsure, and getting a good night’s sleep before the exam. It may also be helpful to enlist the help of a tutor or study group to help you prepare.

Finally, it is important to stay up-to-date on current best practices in reading instruction and to be familiar with the California State Standards for Reading and Language Arts. You can find more information about the RICA and how to prepare for it on the CTC website.

Smart Test-Taking Strategies

Here are some strategies that may help you prepare for and succeed on the RICA exam:

  1. Review the content covered on the exam: Make sure you are familiar with the material that will be covered on the RICA. Review RICA Test videos, study guide, and make sure to complete the RICA Workbook (all included in our test preparation material.) Moreover, make sure to focus on areas where you may need more practice or clarification.

  2. Practice time management: The RICA exam is timed, so it is important to manage your time effectively. Practice taking practice tests or quizzes under timed conditions to help you develop your speed and accuracy.

  3. Review test-taking strategies: Familiarize yourself with strategies such as eliminating incorrect answer choices, making educated guesses when you are unsure, and reading the questions and all answer choices carefully.

  4. Get a good night’s sleep before the exam: Being well-rested will help you feel more alert and focused on exam day.

  5. Take care of yourself: Eat a healthy breakfast and stay hydrated on exam day. Make sure to arrive at the testing location early so you have time to relax and get settled before the exam begins.

  6. Stay focused: Avoid distractions and stay focused on the task at hand. If you find yourself getting stuck on a question, move on and come back to it later if you have time.

  7. Seek help if you need it: If you are struggling to understand a concept or are feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek help by asking a question in our RICA Test Facebook group.
